Summer of Short Stuff

After enjoying chasing a summer of short stuff last year I’m set to do similar this year so if you’re looking for something a bit different, want to test yourself over a shorter distance or just want something to sharpen your pace then these are great events:

Radley Charles Kear Memorial Open Meeting

A really low key day of track (and field) events from 100 metres up to 1500m. Last year’s timetable enabled me to do both the 800m and 1500m races. You’re put into heats based on your expected time so can be competing against juniors, seniors or vets. More info here:

Sun 24 March 2019

Oxford City Open Graded Meetings

Not as low key as the Radley meet, these evening meetings are still open to a range of abilities. Each meeting has a different selection of events including sprints and either 800m or 1500m from a middle distance point of view. More info here:

Wed 24 April 2019

Wed 22 May 2019

Wed 19 June 2019

Wed 17 July 2019

County Championships

More serious than the open meets but still open to all – so long as you have set a time in the event you want to race in before the championships. The 800m and 1500m races were held on separate days last year, alongside all the other tradtional trak and field events. More info will eventually be available here:

Sat 11 May 2019

Sun 12 May 2019

Sri Chinmoy Transendence Summer Races

Set in Cutteslowe Park in Oxford on a Monday night, laps of the Peace Mile (part of the Oxford parkrun course) are used for the varying distances. A decent mix of abilities on show and trophies available for the series (based on the 1st 3 races). More info here:

Mon 06 May 2019 – 2M

Mon 20 May 2019 – 3M

Mon 03 June 2019 – 4M

Mon 17 June 2019 – 3M

Cumnor 5k

A great little race on a summer’s evening. Two laps on tarmac and gravel and your race number also acts as a raffle ticket for prizes! More info here:

Sat 22 June 2019

Cheltenham Midsummer Open Graded Meetings

Similar to the Oxford open meetings, you’re graded into heats based on your expected race times on these Wednesday evening track meetings. A variety of distances on offer including, usually, a chance to race the Mile. More info here:

Wed 03 July 2019

Wed 10 July 2019

Wed 17 July 2019

Wed 24 July 2019

Other events with dates still to be confirmed:

Iffley Festival of Miles, July – graded races on the iconic Iffley Road track where Bannister ran the first sub 4 minute mile

Bourton One Mile Challenge, July – a chip-timed single mile on the road back into Bourton

SOAR Mile (London), July – multiple track mile races organised by the SOAR clothing brand, last year set at the London 2012 warm up track at the Olympic park

Alchester 5k, August – a well organised late summer race on road and tracks
