Witney staff raise funds for Maggie’s Centres

Back in the spring, Maggie’s Centres was chosen as the Aberdeen-based Stewart Milne Group’s charity of the year.  Since then, the Witney staff of the Timber Systems Division have been coming up with fundraising ideas to make the most of the Group’s promise to match all funds raised.  As well as the usual dress down days, sweepstakes and cake bakes there are a number of more unusual fundraising events taking place.

In March, a member of their Finance team, Dan Wymer, embarked on a running challenge: to cover 800km – the distance between the proposed Maggie’s Centres in Oxford and Aberdeen – within 12 months.  Since 2000 he has taken part in a handful of Great North Run’s and various 10k races but had never taken on such a prolonged bout of running.

Now running 3 or 4 times a week, he can normally be spotted on the roads around Witney in his Maggie’s t-shirt although so far his running habit has seen him take part in the Carterton 10k, Thame 10k and the British 10k in London as well as covering 30 kilometres in Central Park whilst on holiday in New York with his wife to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

Dan has been inspired to run more and mentored by his old school friend and local running star Steve Naylor.

Dan is now into his 5th month of running and has now passed the half way point of his virtual journey – he’d be deep in the Lake District if he were running the road route.  Within the next 2 weeks he expects to be “crossing the border” which he hopes will bring a flood of donations from his Scottish colleagues to add to the £551 already raised.

Another employee hoping to get people donating in the next couple of weeks is Design Team Leader, Graham Mackie.  After some encouragement from his fellow colleagues he has volunteered to get his self-proclaimed “Tom Selleck” chest hair waxed in return for cash for Maggie’s.  The lovely ladies from the Witney Lakes Resort Spa have donated their services to take on the mammoth task on August 19th.  As well as sponsorship, the event will be pay-per-view for people who are brave enough to watch!

The organiser of a regular comedy club, Andi Currie, has agreed to help inject a little more fun into the fundraising efforts by donating all profits of Lil Fat Comedy’s August show to the Stewart Milne charity total.  Since Andi started the monthly club he has attracted big name TV comedians including Sarah Millican, Greg Davies, Milton Jones and Rufus Hound.

Hosted at Fat Lil’s on Corn Street, the doors will open at 19:30 on Wednesday 24th August for the comedy show starting at 20:30, featuring 4 comedians including Alfie Moore, currently featuring on ITV’s “Show Me The Funny”.  Tickets are £7, available from Fat Lil’s or Rapture.

Whilst all these events are happening the Stewart Milne staff continue to think of other ideas and events that will help them increase their fundraising total.  Some of the ideas still under development include a London to Paris bike ride, a golf day and a Christmas raffle.

If you are interested in getting involved by making a donation or perhaps by offering goods and services as prizes or can assist in turning their fundraising ideas into reality please contact Rachel or Dan on 01865 303900 or e-mail Dan on dwymer@stewartmilne.com.
